The saying ‘beware the wounded athlete’, has proved poignant yet again with Julian Wilson winning the first event of the 2018 WCT season, all the while nursing a shoulder injury.
Riding his signature Limited Edition FCS Pink Products in support of breast cancer awareness, and the new FCS Freedom Leash, Jules scored some grinding Kirra pits on his way to victory over Ace Buchan.
Jules now sits on top of the leader board going into the second event at Bells Beach, that’s a perfect start to the year.
Fins
See those pink stripes? Sure you did… Jules was running his signature Limited Edition Pink FCS II JW Large fin in support of breast cancer awareness. What you might not have noticed was a new graphic on the inside face of his fin, and the updated material. Cool your jets though! Only Jules has access to these fins right now. The new JW fins constructed in Performance Core (PC) material and featuring our new Air Core technology will be available later in the year.
The FCS II JW template is available in Grom, Medium & Large sizes, and this fin sits in the Carver family, so it’s suited to power surfing on open face waves, and boards with more rocker.Traction
Another one of Julian’s pink products was proudly adhered to the tail of each and every board he used at the Quik Pro. Focusing on increased traction and reduced weight, Julian’s pad is one of the most popular in the FCS Traction range.
As you’d expect his 3-piece pad has all the bells and whistles; thinner EVA, extra perforations, defined channels through the arch, high tail kick and a double square groove. If you have a high arch, this is the perfect pad!Leash
For finals day, in thumping 6 foot plus Kirra, it was the FCS 6’ Regular Leash, but in the preliminary rounds Jules was sporting the new FCS Freedom Leash. Just launched to the public, this new leash is lighter, stronger, tangle free, and has just set a new benchmark in leash innovation and performance.
”My equipment takes on a whole different meaning at this event. Running the pink highlights on all my signature products to help bring some attention to breast cancer awareness is something that’s close to my heart”. - Julian Wilson
64 WSL World Championship Tour events, and 12 WSL World Titles, have now been won by surfers riding the FCS II system and fins.
SurFebruary is a fun annual event in February, where participants raise money for cancer research by catching a wave or getting in the water every day – rain, hail or shine.
This episode sees Rich catch up with Mick Fanning on his recent trip to the US to chat about what he’s been riding, the development of his iconic fin template and how he came to embrace the FCS II system.
